Schooner Governor Ames 1888 Launch
The schooner Governor Ames preparing for launch in 1888, Leavitt-Storer Shipyard, Waldeboro, Maine. The Governor Ames was the first five-masted schooner built on the East Coast. She later sank off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, in December 1909, drowning 11 sailors. Many of our ancestors were associated with the shipbuilding industry here.
